@Hugo, yes the modal setting looks to have been updated. I used gconf- editor to uncheck that setting, and confirmed this as you suggested.
I am still using gnome-shell 3.2, though. You think update to 3.4 might + the modal thing might help? @fig, when you say it crashes, what does it look like on your screen? I assumed the problem was that everything becomes unresponsive or "frozen".
