I don't think this is fixed in 12.04.

I have an asus G73Sw and when I tried the Live CD, headphones didn't work.
When I upgraded from 11.10 (where everthing was working fine) I could not get
it work by fooling around with the sound control under preferences. but it
would not persist across a reboot. Since then I've performed a fresh install
and I can only get my onboard speakers to work. And no headphone output at all
when I plug the head phone jack in, even though sound control acknowledges
that the headphones are plugged in.

I'm thinking about filing a big against 12.04 but wanted to do my
research first. It is annoying as my external speakers are driven via my
headphones jack.
