OK, just tried https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

I issued the suspend command as instructed and the laptop suspended.
When I attempted to resume from suspend, the laptop behaved as though I
was restarting from a shutdown. There was no pause or hesitation (as
usual). When I typed in the command dmesg > dmesg.txt, nothing happened,
no message was forthcoming.

Haven't yet tested the upstream kernel. Will do that next.
