I was able to reproduce the symptoms and then fix the problem as
described here:

Perhaps this applies to you too.  That is, first make sure that you can
set that route manually

    ip route add  1.2.3.0/24 via 10.0.0.5 dev eth0 metric 1

If you get

    RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument

then no route is added and NM also can't add that route.

Can you confirm that the route you are trying to create can be set up
using "ip route"?  Please post the command you use and the text you
enter into the applet.

Even if it turns out that your problem was also incorrect route data,
it's still a shortcoming in nm-applet that it doesn't inform the user.
