removing the package completely and reinstalling through synaptic fixed the error. Error only occurs when installed through ubuntu-software- center. Had to change pdns.conf include line to include=/etc/powerdns/pdns.d/pdns.local to solve the error 'Fatal error: Trying to set unexisting parameter 'gmysql-host''
