By default we try to connect to the internet and verify that the connection is 
fully active by verifying the checksum of 
http://start.ubuntu.com/connectivity-check.html
We also do a geoip query to  http://geoname-lookup.ubuntu.com/?query=London to 
establish user's location/timezone and preferred keyboard layout.
Language packs are automatically downloaded and installed such that one doesn't 
see "Incomplete language support" upon rebooting.
One can choose to further download remaining security fixes and updates as well 
as third party drivers.

In the top right corner there is network indicator which lets you easily 
disable internet connection.
Alternatively unplug your network cable or switch off wifi using hardware 
switch/keyboard buttons (many laptops have them)
