looks like you are having trouble with your X driver.  Drop into an alternate 
console (Ctrl+Alt F1  , you can use F1 through F6) login and edit xorg.conf file
    sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

change
     Section "Device"
        #Driver         "ati"
        Driver         "vesa"
     EndSection

type 'startx' to start X.  This should hopefully get you into a working
desktop.  Look at Ubuntu forums for more help
