*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 12124 ***
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/12124

This is not a duplicate of #12124. Also, it is not a duplicate of 8471,
10186, 12720, 12723 or 13912.

Those refer to problems at startup or initialization. This bug persists
throughout a session.

It can be avoided by ensuring one's hand(s) are always lifted well above
the touchpad, but that's much easier in theory than in practice. The
problem is not materially eased by setting the option "turn touchpad off
while typing"; at least so far as I have been able to tell, this option
has no effect at all.

This has been a serious problem for me since June, 2008 (Ubuntu 8.04)
through the present (Ubuntu 12.04 and also Linux Mint Mate 14). The
differences between these distributions and the three computers on which
I have used them are merely in magnitude, though it has been extremely
annoying and time-consuming (for correcting problems) on all four of my
installs.

Dell Inspiron 1500 (Ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04)
HP Pavilion dv6 (Ubuntu 12.04)
HP Pavilion dv7 (Linux Mint Mate 14)

I have seen yelo3's suggestions for editing xorg.conf (bug 12124 --
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-driver-
synaptics/+bug/12124. Also yelo3's postings October 8, 2007; November
17, 2009 and September 14, 2010. Although this suggestion may well ease
or even solve the problem, I hesitate to implement it on my production
machines -- lost operational time could be a serious problem.

The severity for this bug needs to be elevated sharply because it is
such a time waster and has persisted so long.
