Basically it entails starting alsamixer from the command line, then moving to the various external ports related controls and pushing the m key to unmute the devices. Michael then mentions saving settings with alsactl. Earl, maybe you could give the above a test and see how it works? You definitely have sound on the laptop, so we know the sound driver is working.. It's just a matter of getting the external ports working and it makes total sense that they would be muted..
