I'd gladly give this a try, but I don't know the first thing about building Linux from source. I've been building FreeBSD and XFree86 from source for years, and have build the GNU toolchain more times than I care to think about. But I don''t know where to start with Linux. The documentation doesn't seem geared to someone who just wants to get the source and build it (or I'm looking in all the wrong places). If you could give me a pointer, or better yet a definitive recipe for building HAL, I'd love to give this a go. The Sony drive I was going to swap in turned out to be dying, so I have a day or so to kill waiting for a replacement drive which is ultimately destined for the donor machine anyway, so I have a real incentive to get this working.
