If you need a testbed just install gnome-session-flashback in a 14.04 virtualbox vm.
I tried using it and had the exact same issues as on my desktop. I used the latest virtualbox from the 14.04 repos/no usb/ no guest tools It shipped broken. I read in another place that there was a new compiz in staging with large feature changes.
