@Björn --- you are right, sorry.

To add something constructive, I mention I have a workaround if the file
is sufficiently simple to be able to save it in RTF:

1) save the file in RTF format 
2) open it with a text editor (vi, gedit) 
3) substitute all occurrences of 

    "\chshdng0\chcfpat0\chcbpat7"

   to

     "\highlight7"

4) Save it.

Now Word is (usually) able to edit the highlight in the file. I tested
it only with simple files --- so YMMV.
