As the bug watch mentioned, this issue was fixed in Debian, and the new package has been synced to in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Utopic Unicorn. There crawl-tiles works without any problems, so this issue can be considered fixed.
For users on Ubuntu 14.04, it is either possible to A) as a workaround, install ttf-dejavu-core which will provide the necessary fonts. B) Since this is a significant bug in Ubuntu it is possible to request a Stable Release Update. I have to admit I don't know how easy this will be as the fix in Debian was applied after first upgrading from version 0.13 to 0.14. If someone needs a fix for this bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please perform as much as possible of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.
