This problem also exists in 6.06 LTS Dapper. A bypass is to view the file in xpdf, which replaces unknown fonts with those it can render correctly. I think PDF standard requires viewers to have some fonts, so those fonts are not embedded by default. Because of this, a lot of pdf:s are shown incorrectly.
