Hi - I think I had some hardware problems that may have precipitated this. I ran the memory checker just to be thorough, and it seems there were problems in one memory stick (in what had been a dead stable system the last time I used it about 3 weeks ago).
Rather than asking you to chase this down (which may not at all be a program problem), I have replaced each stick of memory, re-run the memory checker, and am retrying the installation (which so far is going much further, and much more successfully). My apologies for "crying wolf" without proper diligence. As I said, this machine ran fine up until very recently, so I'm unsure what has caused those memory sticks to go wonky.
