Hi, Brian - you can close/cancel this - I was able to categorically prove that I had some failed memory sticks in my motherboard.
Those have been replaced, it's working fine now and installation went perfectly. I don't want you on a wild goose chase when it was a hardware problem. Sorry for the misdirection.
