Could it be that you have a motherboard based on SiS662 chipset? (Like
D201GLY)

Xorg driver has a known problem with this chipset. It will show noise
(vertical lines, snow, etc.) then working in high resolution modes (like
1024x768 and 1280x1024). See this thread:

Workarounds / resolutions:
- Compile 'premium' sis driver from here: 
http://www.winischhofer.eu/linuxsispart4.shtml . Driver won't compile cleanly 
on Xorg 1.3.0, some modifications are required (use of XORG_VERSION_CURRENT >= 
XORG_VERSION_NUMERIC macros)
- Use binary driver, that was distributed by Intel (it was removed from their 
site, use Google's cache...)
- Use 'vesa' driver. It won't support XV or DRI, it's slower, but it works.
