I've reproduced this bug using Gutsy and synaptic version 0.60ubuntu5.
I received the following dialog:
E: Malformed line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
and then synaptic quit. It mentions going to the repository dialog
which isn't really possible if synaptic just quits so this seems quite
unhelpful. At a minimum I think better instructions should be given on
how to resolve the issue.
