Can you confirm that an autostart file was correctly created at ~/.config/autostart/variety.desktop and that it's enabled in your session settings? The CalledProcessError bit is fixed in 0.7.2-1 (as well as in the nightly builds), but shouldn't actually be related to this because it doesn't cause Variety to exit.
