Public bug reported:

I was prompted today while logged in to upgrade from 19.04 to 19.10.

I said yes and about halfway through the installation of packages my
login crashed.

I tried logging in a couple more times and sometimes got the "something
went wrong" screen of death and sometimes, remarkably, got prompted by
the upgrader for various questions that needed answering before my login
crashed again.

Finally the upgrade was hung and I had to kill it.

I ended up logging in on a terminal and running `apt-get update --fix-
missing`, `dpkg --configure -a`, `apt-get install -f`, and then `apt-get
autoremove` which was (I hope) enough to bring things back to the
correct state. At least, I'm able to log in (after rebooting).

Upgrade crashing in the middle is not a good thing.
