+ 1. Open configuration for "desktop switcher" in panel (e.g. right click on
the widget)
+ 2. Change the display from number to name
+ 3. Change the default names from "desktop 1," "desktop 2," etc. to something
else, (e.g. "a," "b," etc.)
+ 4. Click Close
+ 5. Reboot or logout/back in

The desktop names in the panels desktop switcher are always return to
the default names at restart. Not saving when I gives names to it.
