Maybe try enabling Wayland and then see if logging into 'Ubuntu on
Wayland' avoids the problem.

To enable Wayland you will need to change the kernel parameter:

  nomodeset

to:

  nvidia-drm.modeset=1

and then run:

  sudo update-grub

and reboot.
