I am not certain this is related, but on a fresh install on my laptop
with a gtx 1050 2gb, I installed the nvidia drivers. The 'intel
graphics' option was greyed out on the nvidia prime selection and the
wayland session was not available (gear missing).

I used the terminal command 'sudo prime-select intel'.

After reboot, the intel option is selected as well as greyed out and
wayland is the default and running smoothly (actually there was some lag
on X11, esp on boot with the dock, which is now gone).
