Your bug sounds really like bug 54621 and I would be very surprised that it is really caused by usplash since it's a kernel panic, but we should not exclude any possibilities. In order to get more information about the issue that you are experiencing, can you :
1. Boot your computer multiple times without usplash and multiple times with usplash? If the bug is really usplash related, you should always be able to boot when usplash is not started. 2.
