Just installed todays update of the kernel, alsa, and thunderbird,
rebooted and tried the following:
start thunderbird 2.0.0.12
go to preferences, general
select "use the following sound:" with a valid sound file
click on play
-sound plays
click on play
-sound plays

start rhythmbox, playback some MP3

click on play
-thunderbird freezes

freeze does not happen when playing MP3 through Totem Movieplayer, and
Totem and Rhythmbox can play simultanious, and now thunderbird does play
again, nice together with two different MP3 files.
strange.
