Dear Ralph, looking at your screenshot, is it possible that your terminal is
using medium-hinting
instead of full-hinting? If you go to /etc/fonts/conf.d, to you have a symlink
to 10-hinting-full or to
10-hinting-medium?
This does not affect Firefox though.
Fonts in Firefox became very fuzzy --- Xubuntu 8.04.
