Aha. Ok, I see the problem (aside from "I read the man page, rather than
hunting through /usr/share/doc ;-)

When I upgraded from dapper to edgy, my ethernet interfaces went from
eth1/eth2 to eth0/eth1. (I didn't have an eth0 under dapper, for various
reasons related to a motherboard swap).

It looks like the upgrade updated the interfaces file, but botched it.
This is a kinda odd case, I guess, so I can't say I'm suprised it messed
it up. Anyway, it's working now. Maybe there should be either a link to
that file from nm-applet's "About" window, or the manpage?
