I am not sure what is going on here, but I am running Intrepid live-cd 
(~alpha2) from a USB stick, and for instance "ls -l /var/lib/apt" hangs in 
interruptible sleep. strace ends with:
 lstat64("/var/lib/apt/lists", 
For instance "\ls -d /var/lib/apt/lists" hangs but "\ls -d /var/lib/apt" does 
not. From the attached kern.log with sysrq trace, my uneducated guess is on 
aufs.
