Personally speaking, I'd suggest installing i386 on commonly
available hardware. There are a number of FTBFS on lpia, and other
packages that simply aren't built for all architectures. The physical
size of the device is fairly unimportant: it is only the chip inside
that matters. The lpia packages are possibly more optimised for
atom-based devices, but there has been discussion throughout both the
intrepid and jaunty cycles as to whether the CFLAGS used are ideal, and
the consensus is that they may not be. There is work underway to
resolve this in the future, but for now i386 is probably the better
architecture for new installs.
Speaking for the Mobile team, ubuntu-netbook-remix (1) is clearly
the best image to install for common netbooks (and only available for
i386). Mind you, I'd expect other teams to recommend other images
(Ubuntu Desktop, Kubuntu Desktop, Xubuntu Desktop, etc.), so this may be
a biased answer.
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook-remix/daily-live/current/ has
current images, and one should appear on releases.ubuntu.com in due course.
