Public security bug reported:

xserver-xorg-video-ati driver causes screen to go black numerous times
during start up of hardy 8.04 LTS x64. It goes black, then shows part of
the start up proces briefly, then black, then shows up briefly start up
process, then again and again - the flickering goes on now for longer
periods upon hardy x64 start up. No desktop effects are enabled. Compiz
is not present at all. No memory issues - checked with latest memtest
ver. 4.0.  This happens not only on hardy x64, but also on karmic x64
and jaunty x64. Please advise.
