Kernel modesetting, required for the nice boot splash, has been disabled
by default on your video card in Lucid to try and reduce the serious
stability issues on i845 cards.  The i8xx freeze page here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes documents the
workarounds - the third one “Enable KMS” will get you the nicer
bootsplash (but might make your system more unstable).

Marking this as invalid; sadly, this is the way it is.
