Kavuma and Okot Bitek Kampala Rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army Saturday ambushed a vehicle in Pader district hours after their leader declared that he stood for peace. The rebels set the vehicle ablaze on Saturday at Okina in Aruu County, killing an unspecified number of civilians. Joseph Kony had said in the morning that he was interested in peace talks but only with President Yoweri Museveni. UPDF 4 Division spokesman Lt. Paddy Ankunda said he had learnt of the ambush but had not yet got the details of the casualties. In another incident the rebels ambushed a Caltex fuel tanker that was heading to Kitgum. The attack occurred in Laguti sub-county, also in Pader. UPDF spokesman Maj. Shaban Bantariza said the tonne-boy of the tanker, whose identity could not be readily established, died shortly after reaching Gulu. The tanker driver managed to reach Gulu town, dirty and looking tired. However, company officials did not allow him to speak to the media. By press time the tanker was still by the roadside, with fuel leaking.
