How about the 40,000 Regular UPDF troops..are they also going to fight 100 KONY rebels who are on the run to Sudan not to mention arrow group with 10,000 Militia... Lira The Army Commander, Maj. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, has said that the thousands of recruits of Amuka Defence Unit are ready for deployment to fight LRA rebels.The rebels are led by Mr Joseph Kony. The militia have been undergoing military training at Aler farm in Lira since December 15, 2003.
Aronda was on January 9 addressing the recruits at the training ground, 8kms north of Lira town.He apologised to the recruits for being given one meal a day in the past. He said he was not aware.He said government will start paying salaries to the militia next month.The Commanding Officer of the training wing, Lt Col. Jim Willis Byarugaba denied reports that 8000 militia had quit the training. He said only 180 had deserted training.Relevant Links
He said a total of 7,401 people were recruited, 29 of whom were admitted to Lira Hospital with cough and malaria.However, the UPDF 5th Division Commander, Lt. Col. George Etyang, said desertion of military training is a common practice in any military training.
