Kyeyo policy evolves

By Alfred Wasike

UGANDA is formulating policy guidelines to put in place a framework for recruiting citizens who may wish to get jobs abroad, internal affairs minister Dr. Ruhakana rugunda said yesterday.

He said the Government would help citizens with consular services to streamline their relocation to their jobs. Rugunda hailed the contributions to national development by ugandans working abroad.

He said money remitted by Ugandans abroad was the biggest source of income for the country.

“Last year, about US$800m (about sh1.4 trillion) was remitted by Ugandans living abroad,” he said while reacting to criticism from a Ugandan living in Canada, Opiyo Oloya, who said Rugunda made derogatory remarks about Ugandans doing odd jobs (kyeyo) abroad.

Rugunda said, “I salute Ugandans who have secured jobs abroad.

They are not only sustaining themselves and their families abroad, but are also remitting money to Ugan da for development.”

He said contrary to the views expressed by Oloya in his Wednesday article, Rugunda had “immense respect for the importance and dignity of labour irrespective of what job was done.

Is this a policy or an admission that Museveni is clueless & vision-challenged on how to grow the economy to generate jobs in Uganda?
