Hi , I had some similar problems installing XP on a dell d630.
The problem was related to the SATA operation in the bios set to ATA or
UHCI.
I could only boot linux in UHCI mode - and only install XP in ATA mode.
The solution that I used was to use UHCI and to use driver packs from
http://driverpacks.net/ and slipstream the mass storage drivers using the
text mode option. There is a tutorial on the site the should help.
