What would you say are the correct characters to encode the symbols for "long" and "short" (or actually stressed and otherwise) metrical syllables in classic poetry analysis?
Though these obviously share a common ancestry with U+0304 : COMBINING MACRON and U+0306 : COMBINING BREVE (and/or with their spacing counterparts), respectively, their usual typrographic representation in line is as a wide glyph set in the middle of the slug line. The big breve can be encoded as U+2323 : SMILE (who ever thought up theses names, anyway?), and there seems to no other choice, but I hesitate about the long syllable marker: Should it be U+2013 : EN DASH or rather U+2014 : EM DASH?...
