On Sun, 22 Jun 2003 the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine had an article on two local girls, Sarah of Springfield Avenue and Leigh of Pine Street. A link to the article is shown below. http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/special_packages/inquirer_magazin e/6117852.htm
(The link is long, so if it breaks in transmission, please just close the gap.) The girls graduated from Masterman in June and satisfied the requirements of their project, but... as they head to college, they realized their commitment extended beyond the graduation requirement and High School grading system. They want to convert theory to reality and bring electricity to at least one Village school in Argentina. Today I received a note from Sarah asking me if I would post her plea to the list. Here is what Sarah and Leigh have already achieved: They have connected with Nadia Adawi of Astropower to define and acquire and be trained upon solar powered cells. The cells may enable a school in an isolated Village to extend its hours and with electric lights and power to serve additional evening functions (as study hall, community center, etc.). They have already raised $150 by themselves. The White Dog Cafe has offered the girls a Grant of $500, if they can raise matching funds from within their community. Even though neither girl is Catholic they plan to work through Catholic Charities in Salta, one of the northern Argentine provences, to identify a village / school which has need coupled with the will to cooperate in this project. The girls have arranged with Masterman to channel money through Masterman Home and School's 501c3 status so that all contributions are tax deductible. Sarah and Leigh hope that many "angels" will donate $10 / each and that a few neighbors will make bigger contributions so that they can get the full benefit of the White Dog Cafe grant. Contributions should be by check, payable to Masterman Home and School and sent through Sarah McCullough. They hope that they can be two Philly kids who can make a difference a continent and hemisphere away. Please contact Sarah, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] with any questions and for further instructions for pick up or delivery of checks. All the best!
