Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Welcome to the August edition of the University City Crime Update, a monthly
UCD email to keep you informed about crime patterns and trends in University
City. Each month we map serious crime activity in University City, as well as
provide a 13-month context for that activity.

July saw decreases in the number of aggravated assaults and residential
burglaries, and an increase in robberies. Much of this increase is due to a
string of incidents involving a single suspect, who has since been apprehended.
It pays to be vigilant when walking or jogging alone. We have provided tips to
increase safety below the statistics.

24 serious crimes were committed within the University City District
boundaries. (See map below.) Police presence has increased in a few key areas,
and arrests related to nine of these crimes have already been made.

UCD and the Philadelphia Police Department, in addition to the Penn and Drexel
police departments and other institutional public safety divisions, respond
with a strategic and coordinated effort to address these and other crimes in
the neighborhood. We also ask you to use extra caution and remain vigilant.

What to do when walking at night:

Avoid walking or running alone at night. Instead go walking or jogging with a
friend
Make use of the Escort Program when walking from 10am to 3am at 215-898-WALK
(9255) or 215-387-3942
Don't use headphones while walking or jogging, it may increase your
vulnerability.
Always walk in well-lighted areas
Avoid the use of short cuts
After dark, keep away from large bushes or doorways where someone could be
lurking
Always stay near the curb
If you think you are being followed or feel threatened, go to an open place of
business and seek assistance or call 911
Call 911 to report suspicious persons or activity in or around your
neighborhood. Don't wait until it's too late!
Try not to overload yourself with packages, books, etc
Carry a whistle
