Echoing the 25-30% feedback, that's pretty big. I haven't done any direct head to head Apache v. Nginx, I will say though that even if they returned the exact same performance you'll notice that Nginx does it using far fewer resources. A few Google queries will turn up plenty of comparisons.
The only specific thing that I believe is still a known issue with lighttpd is that it leaks memory under high load. That's been around for several years so it may have been fixed by now, or depending on your usage you may not see it at all. My other endorsement for Nginx is that we use it quite a bit on WordPress.com, Gravatar.com and Polldaddy.com (and others). I figure if it is good enough to do 2.1 billion page views per month for WordPress.com then it's been battle tested pretty well ( http://www.quantcast.com/p-18-mFEk4J448M ).
