Hmm - I use a Mac and it works here.  Maybe you need to add it to ~/.bashrc 
instead of ~/.bash_profile in your case.

According to Apple's docs:

       /etc/profile
              The systemwide initialization file, executed for login shells
       ~/.bash_profile
              The personal initialization file, executed for login shells
       ~/.bashrc
              The individual per-interactive-shell startup file

You can also simply type it in a terminal to activate it for THAT Terminal 
session.
