I just have this
     <map:match pattern="*.ico">
       <map:read src="icons/{1}.ico"/>
     </map:match>
and somehow, i didn't need any links in the html to make it works, i think the browser just look for it at the root of the domain and display it if it's found

And make sure you have the *.ico matcher in the sitemap, i forgot this before and spend a few hours understanding why the icon wouldn't show up.

Then, as suggested, you can check at the HTTP level, what precise URL the browser looks for.
