"limit your quoting" means trim the stuff that is no longer relevant from the 
original post leaving what is relevant. The thread is probably still on 
computers of those that are following it. If you had done this your original 
premise that it is a long post that you were replying to no longer holds 
water.

Wikipedia  has a good article on posting styles showing what interspersed 
replying means (called interleaved by Wikipedia).

What it comes down to - if you are going to bother to reply then follow the 
guidelines even if they are not the method you prefer.
