Hello John, I do not have the answers to your questions, Hopefully Christian Lippka who heads the development of the graphics project and who sometimes reads this list will be able to shed some light as to why, given the claim that OOo is built around a common core set of functionalities, character styles exist in Writer and not in Impress. BTW, I provided the wrong link before, here's the correct one [1]. Maybe it would make sense to re-open [2] which was marked as duplicate of 19340 but that was more "focussed" on this particular issue (and still has 6 votes :-) ).
