Mark: Need a little clarification:
You cannot use Base on your system. This is very clear. Your friend, who used a different download than you can use Base. This is very clear. The part that is not clear is if you use your friend's download on your system or if you use your download on a friend's system that causes the third problem. Also, do you have a Java Runtime Engine (JRE) installed on your computer.
