If you feel brave, you may want to consider downloading the beta version of
OpenOffice 3.0 where you will find in the task pane of impress a table tool.
This way you can insert tables natively.

I tried it a bit and it works very well. The only drawback is that OOo3.0
will use a new version of the OpenDocumentFormat (1.2?) which means that
re-opening the file saved with OOo3.0 in OOo 2.4 may trigger a warning
message.
