I have just came across http://www.mapplanet.com while looking for details on Thorney Island (UK). The map applet provided latitude and longitude information and temperature(°C)/conditions. Also, the right mouse button allows one to drag a line to measure distances in kilometers. Nice! As an example, click on "Start applet", then select "alphabetical listing" to select a site. Even on US sites, the distances read out in kilometers. It's not exactly a vector-graphic, topological mapping system, however. It's rather more schematic.
