Jim and Pat, This is quite interesting, as it is the first time I have read of a pharmacy technician course being offered at a high school (usually, this course is found at community colleges). Pharmacy technicians do the technical work that assists us phamacists in managing medication preparation and distribution. In community pharmacies, they do data entry and prepare medication for dispensing to the patient by retrieving, labeling, and arranging the finished prescription products as well as do all the supportive tasks such as checking in medication shipments. In the hospital, they do similar work, but it is much more extensive in that they prepare all the compounded sterile products (intravenous mixtures) at the pharmacists' direction. It has only been during this decade that pharmacy technician positions have required state licensure in the U.S. Pharmacy technology is a superb occupation in itself, but it is also ideal preparation for getting to know what the pharmacist profession is all about, and is excellent experience to have when applying for admission to pharmacy school. As one of the students said, it could be used as a steppingstone to nursing, too (one of the pharmacy technicians in my hospital progressed to a leadership position in nursing).
Education in the metric system is required of all pharmacy technicians.
