Listees-

Thanks Once again for the valuable help, and assistance with the Crate engine
issue. I will go this route this June. This list is great and offers some of
the best help anyone with Aluminum fever could hope for.

Happy Holidays everyone-

I had a 1975 for quite a while. A great old rig, and good for towing.
However, they rust badly, especially around the windshield (and even
here in California where we don't salt the roads).

Best regards,

Rik

Has anyone use the Ding King dent removal tool on their Airstream? How
did it work, and did the glue damage the clear coat?

It is interesting how this hobby can open up so many new avenues of interest. After
purchasing my 6.0 Metre (20') Argosy Minuet in August, I learned that the factory had
advertised 6.7 Metre (22'), and a 7.4 Metre (24') Minuet.

Photos of the 20' Minuet can be accessed at:

Photos of the 24' Minuet can be accessed at:

Another trailer that I ran across while doing research on the Minuets was a 1980
Airstream Carvelle - - the first one that I have ever encountered, and it was located
not too far from where I live. Its photos can be seen at:

I don't know how many Argosy fans are subscribers to the list, but thought that these
links might interest any who are out there.

Not sure I have an answer, but have two thoughts.

I've seen somewhere where someone successfully cut 1/8 in plywood strips
and used those for tambour. Not sure it would look great, but perhaps they
could be painted to an acceptable look. You can get it in all kinds of
woods so maybe one would look OK.

I don't know if the aluminum would cause excess or faster wear the plastic
"runners" or whatever you call those things that the tambour rolls on.

I've had success repairing some of my wood colored ones using artists
canvas (sp?) and Elmers white glue. I wonder if that would fix the bulge.

I'm interested in this because I've wondered myself what I was going to do
when my white tambour wears out.

Greetings Mike!

I don't think that you would be disappointed by the quality of work
performed by the Ruths in Helena, Ohio. Their P & S Trailer Service did an
excellent job polishing and plasticoating my '64 Overlander. If you would
like to see some photos of the before and after, you can follow the link
below:

The job was finished just a little less than one year ago and I am thrilled
with the results. They are not the least costly alternative, but they have
a reputation for providing excellent service for several decades. I think
that their average cost is somewhere near $175.00 per linear foot as
measured from the coupler to the rear bumper.

I was at Lowes (home-depot type home improvement chain) the other day, and
they have an LP space heater, approved for use inside a residence (some kind
of O2 or CO2 sensor makes it 'safe')

I think the brand was 'Mr. Heater' and it costs about 100$

Any thoughts from the list?

Greetings Ken!

I have been trying to avoid the painting option if at all possible - - the
one thing that I have been considering is splurging on white oak tambour and
pickling it so that it will nearly match the off-white of the laminate. I
still haven't entirely ruled out the brushed aluminum tambour, and have
inquired of the manufacturer regarding special needs regarding the mounting
tracks. I also asked the same manufacturer about the availability of white
or off-white laminate tambour - - they carry some but all of their products
show dark edges where the slats are beveled and I really want to retain the
consistent white/off-white color if I don't go with the brushed aluminum
tambour.

Since I am not doing the tambour restoration myself, I am trying to minimize
the amount of labor required for the job, so I am not actively considering
trying to repair the tambours that haven't begun to disintegrate. Casual
observation would suggest that regluing to a stiff canvas material and then
resizing the tambour for its opening might remove the bulge, but my concern
is the logevity of the material given the presence of serious cracking,
fraying, splitting, and splintering in three of the six roof locker tambours
in my Minuet. I can't account for the explanation, but the tambour in the
medicine cabinet as well as below the bathroom sink seems to be nearly
perfect. The woodtone veneer tambour below the kitchen sink also has fared
much better than the off-white tambour in the roof lockers.

Thanks for the input - - this is still a decision in process!

Subject: [VACList] electrical question

The installation instructions for my new water heater are very specific
that if used with a converter there must be a battery in line and the
converter power must be "filtered (pure DC)". The instructions say to test
the circuit by using a multimeter set on the AC voltage scale. It says "If
the reading is more than 1/2 volt, the circuit is not DC voltage and should
not be used."

My converter is a new 40 amp Intellipower 9100 with a charge wizard. It
is supposed to be filtered but I thought I'd check. My multitester
indicated about 27 volts on the AC scale with the battery connected and
the converter on, It appeared to give the same reading with the power to
the converter switched off and on a 12 volt battery which was completely
disconnected. Can someone tell me what's happening here? Two
possibilities come to mind: I am doing something completely wrong or
my old inexpensive "multitester" does not do the same thing a modern
"multimeter" does.

Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to fry the electronics in
this water heater.

Not all multitesters are good at separating AC from DC. I suspect yours
will show that same 27 volts while hooked to a battery without the
charger (a source of PURE DC). The ripple voltage reading is only valid
if the tester has a series capacitor so it reads AC only. My fancy
Simpson's read DC voltages (wrongly) on AC except when I use the
separate "output" connection for the positive lead that goes through a
capacitor for just such measurements.

Its not so much a difference between "Modern" and "ault" multitesters
and a fundamental design difference that has always confused that
measurement.

Subject: [VACList] Re:383 Stroker Engine

Hi Alex,

By now I think you have received a lot ideas about replacement engines. I
have a 1987 1/2 ton Suburban and on the WBCCI Alyeska Caravan I threw a rod
and had to replace the engine. Luckily I had talked at length with the Chev
dealer in Calgary, Alberta before the trip and after the engine blew
confirmed with the very skilled mechanic in Dawson City, Yukon that a 383
stroker (crate) would be a great replacement - especially as I was not
pleased with the towing capability of the 350 pulling my 8900 lb trailer.
I had the engine flown in and installed - a fair amount of work as many of
the components had to be adjusted. It cost about 50 % more than a standard
350, but with a huge increase to 330 hp and 425 lbs of torque. In the end
it cost me about $7,500 US installed.

The only problems I had were I had to go to Superchips in Florida for a
computer chip ($450 US)for the engine as Chev/GM do not have one, the
distributor gear cam needed to be upgraded to a stronger one and I found out
just as the engine was about to be finished, the paperwork state the engine
was not intended for street or highway use and may not meet emission
standards. Fortunately, when I had it tested in Ontario it was rated a "hot
rod" tested to 1980 carburator standards and get this, with absolutely no
emission controls, it passed with flying colours. That might have been in
part due to the new catalytic converter I had replace a month before. With
the money I have invested in this I will have to drive it till I die,
luckily the body is in perfect condition.

If you need any further information, feel free to contact me off-line.
