Fernando,

(Terry, should we make an FAQ entry from this?)

First of all, the only difference between 1.5.x, 1.6.x and 2.0.0 is the
XML format and the format of the snapshots/saved states. So as long as
you shut down your VM safely, you will be able to use the same .vdi image
with 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0.0 (I do this every day).

Second, the saved states should be compatible between 1.6 and 2.0.0. We
are trying hard to not break the saved states anymore.

The only thing which changes is the xml format of the machine description.
So if you experience any problems during upgrade or downgrade you can
just create a new VM, detach the hard disk from the old VM and attach it
to the new VM. For Windows guests make sure you use the same settings
for I/O APIC, PIIX3/4 and ACPI. Other settings should not make any
matter and Linux guests don't care anyway.

If you upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6 or 2.0.0 then the GUI will ask you for
conversation of the .xml files the first time you start it. Press 'backup'
to keep the old .xml files around. In case you want to downgrade you can
use the saved backup files.

If you upgrade from 1.6 to 2.0.0 and start a VM, the machine description
will contain new elements after the VM settings were saved or after the
VM terminates. If you try to start the same VM with 1.6 now this will not
work as 1.6 does not understand the new 2.0 elements. Manual edition of
the .xml file is required -- just remove the two superflous elements and
press the 'Refresh' button. This is kind of annoying and we are aware of
this but currently there is no other way to downgrade.

Kind regards,

Frank
