vdelivermail uses a funcion called vauth_getpwd() to get the userdetails. This function is located in the file vauth.c. But this Function ONLY uses the cdb files:
At configuration time, vpopmail makes vauth.c a static link to vcdb.c, vmysql.c, vpgsql.c or one of the other auth modules. When you look at vauth.c, you're looking at the auth module you configured for.
